ideologies behind futurism, further investigating how Frank Gehry has incorporated
futurist characteristics into his work primarily the ‘Fondation Louis Vuitton’.

What is Futurism? Established in the early-20th century
Italy, this architectural style is defined by stretched dynamic lines which
create a sense of motion and lyricism. The futurism ideology was first
presented by a poet called Filippo Tommaso Marinetti in 1909, later merged into
architecture by various architects who fought and died in the First World War.
However amongst these patriots was Antonio Sant’Elia, an integral part of the
futurist movement, Antonio was responsible for creating the Futurist Manifesto
of Architecture. Despite his death arriving very early in his life Sant’Elias
drawings are regarded as some of the most famous and influential of the early

Located in Paris, France, Gehry decided to build LV
foundation on the edge of the water garden which is situated adjacent to the
Jardin d’Acclimatation, an amusement park that evokes the tradition of
19th-century glass garden buildings. The foundation was created with the intent
to be an art museum and cultural centre, however it’s something more, pioneering
and eccentric the project immerses the daily onlooker, immediately the building
lures your attention to an impeccable glass rooftop, supported by wooden beams
twelve immense sails are arranged elegantly next to one another giving the
structure character, transparency and sense of movement. Light reflecting from
the rooftop exposes the water, woods and lush gardens. Structurally Fondation
Louis Vuitton stands on an assemblage of white masses known as icebergs, using
cladding panels of fibre-reinforced concrete to form the walls surrounding it.
As you slowly approach towards the entrance one can understand the liberal and
creative thought process behind the grand design. At ground-level entrance hall
serves as the entry to both the museum and the Jardin, planned to be a lively
social space which features a restaurant and bookstore, opposite the hall a

galleries and corridors you notice large stretches of glass that provide a picturesque
view of neighbouring gardens, assimilating the beautiful landscape into the
experience of the structure. Climbing to exterior stairways underneath the
glass sails to reach the roof one appreciates every aspect of detail put into
construction of the building.

This project has been a catalyst internationally for
innovation in digital design and construction, setting a new standard for the
use of advanced digital and fabrication technologies. More than 400 people
contributed design models, engineering rules and assembly constraints to a
common web-hosted 3D digital model, which intelligently adapted itself to
design requirements. More than 3,600 glass panels and 19,000 concrete panels
that form the fac?ade were simulated using mathematical techniques and molded
using advanced industrial robots, all automated from the shared 3D model. New
software was developed specifically for sharing and working with the complex
design.
