My journey into teaching started back in 2010 having decided to take a gap year to work and travel. I soon found myself standing in front of a class of 30, very excited, rowdy and somewhat disinterested students. I quickly came to realize that the worksheet that I had prepared was not going to cut it. With a cold dose of reality and a bit of quick thinking, I managed to keep their interest, for the better part of 5 minutes, to which they just went back to doing what they were doing.
As daunting as that experience was I came out unscathed, for the most part, and I’ve been teaching now for 7 years. In Thailand as well as Korea. One of the reasons that kept me interested in teaching was that I came to realise that a teacher can impact the lives of people in a more personal and lingering way, compared to what most people can. And that, to me, was a lot more fulfilling than working in a bank selling banking products.
My teaching experience started in 2010 where I taught Science, English and Computer studies in an English program for a year. After that, I spent 2 years in Korea teaching English to Kindergarten, primary school, middle school and high school students, as well as the occasional adult. I then subsequently returned to Thailand where I’m still teaching. These experiences have taught me a lot. When I first started teaching, and still to this day, the classes I have are of a very mixed level. I’ve learned that not all methods work for all students, so making a lesson with flexibility by adding extra support for students with lower levels or those who learn in a different manner is an essential skill. Teaching and travelling in countries where the culture and language are very different has taught me a lot of patience and adaptability. This is especially important when standing in front of a class of students that don’t know what you are saying.
Honestly, the main reason I want to take this course is that teaching has become a vocation for me and I will be living in Thailand in the long term. The PGCEi is recognized and respected in this region and as well as being a part-time course makes this ideal. Another reason is that I’m looking to further my skills as a teacher and gain a deeper knowledge of teaching principals. Having a degree in Finance has given me a solid base for analytical thinking, especially when it comes to marking and record keeping. But I find I lack some of the theoretical and the fundamental aspects of teaching. In studying the PGCEi I’m looking to enhance my teaching by learning theories and applying them in the classroom.
