Materialism
is a belief that focuses on being, and says that everything that exists is
composed of matter and anything outside of matter does not exist. Naturalism is
a similar belief system that focuses on knowing, and says that anything that
exists is composed of natural entities that can be explained and or justified
by scientific investigation. Anything outside of nature is thought by a
naturalist, to be nonexistent or unknowable. Both materialist’s and naturalist’s
belief systems are built on the sheer assumption that the supernatural does not
exist. Materialism and naturalism can explain very little about reality. Charles
Taylor explains their belief system as an “immanent frame,” meaning if I can’t
see it, hear it, or feel it, then it simply does not exist. Materialism and
naturalism are both based on a very strong belief that science can prove or
disprove anything it tests. However, as Christians, we know that science has done
many good things for us but it cannot prove or disprove everything. People
still insist that these beliefs are a rational and reliable means of explaining
creation. So, in conclusion, I say remove your rose-colored glasses and see the
world as it really is, not just material or natural causes, but the workmanship
of God’s mighty hand.
