AbstractThis surveys and interviews on undergraduate students between ages

AbstractThis research proposal will analyze the cognitive and emotional dimensions of college students who lack motivation. Why college students are so content on being complacent in life? Motivation is an internal process that makes a person move towards a goal.Without motivation, you will not succeed any goals in life. Motivation is an important skill or mindset to have during college. My research found  interesting theories on why college students specifically, minorities lack motivation. My research will explore factors such as not having a role model, stress, mood, and your environment can be detrimental to your motivation. The methodology for this study will be to conduct surveys and interviews on undergraduate students between ages of 18-40; this will consist of different religious groups, income levels, and ethnic groups. This will give us more personal insight on why minorities with low apathy symptoms have low motivation. Keywords: Motivation, mood, apathy, behavior, well-being                                                                                                                                                                                                           Literature ReviewThere were several themes that developed from the literature that links to why minority college students lack motivation.  I found not having a Father figure or a positive role model in your life can influence your behavior and many aspects of your life. Most students cope with stress which caused them to drink; drinking can influence your mood and alter your decision making. I found the absence of a positive role model or father figure can alter your decision your decision making and your point of view on life. I found studies that focus on apathy, and how it connects to your motivation. My research will give more personal background on why some minorities college students don’t have the basic tools to be motivated. There can be many problems link to motivation. Research found depression, poor concentration, and mood swings and the list goes on.  Without motivation, student are unable to achieve their academic goals and personal goals. These studies show that students  with higher apathy symptoms will have lower motivation. The lack of motivation can be linked to not having guidance or a positive role model, the amount of stress oneself, your mood and your environment. Transitioning into adulthood can be tough without having the right direction. this  research gives a more personal look on how some students view life goals. The Importance of  Role Models or Fathers  Fathers play an important role in a child’s life. According to Allen and Daly (2007), having a father or a positive role model play a major role in the physical, emotional, and social well-being of a child can have an effect on their development. Children who come from broken or unstables homes are twice as likely to attempt suicide than those who do not come from a broken home these youths tend to have fathers that are uninvolved and have no contact (Walker,2010). Having a role model can influence and shape a person’s behaviors in school, relationships and making difficult decisions. According to Kelley,(1998) “In African-American families, a supportive father-child role has been found to enhance development in very young children”.  Most minority children grow up in a single-parent home. There is a rapid increase of  the number of single-parent homes in the United States. According to the Annie E. Casey Foundation, (2014)  34% of the households are supported by a single-parent with one income. Sixty-six percent of African-American households are single parent homes, while 24% of white households are single parent. Children growing up in single parent home are at greater risk of lower academic performances, behavioral problems, and may experience parental conflict. Most likely, the single parents who are raising children on their own may be limited to financial resources; the lack of funds may mean that the children are forced to raise themselves. This will lead to children who have to support themselves emotionally and physically. Children get their sense of security from their parents and being at home. Imagine transitioning from unstable unsupportive home. From house to house without stability or support. Due to the poor circumstances of their childhood their expectations tend to be low because no one ever pushed them to challenge themselves. Most children often feel neglected because single parent have to be the primary caretaker of the home, forgetting and neglecting the emotional need of the child. In some cases children may begin to act out or develop very poor behavior due to lack of discipline or attention at home. Most minority single parent spend majority of the time working trying to providing for their family. The lack of discipline can cause students to develop poor academic habits. If children don’t receive guidance with their studies or goals in life they don’t recognize their academic strengths or their full potential and students became uninterested or bored. Not having a role model to guide you can alter your motivation. A positive role model can motivate and teach to an extent where students can uncover their true potential, and encourage them to persevere through any barriers. Stress and emotionsEveryone knows a typical college students goes through the most stress during their first year of college. Leaving from a comfortable environment or setting into a diverse university setting can be intimidating. Transitioning into the real world can be a tough challenge to some without any support or guidance. Learning how to meet new and positive people, socializing or networking, maintaining healthy relationships and a good G.P.A,. In some cases having a part/full time job can be a lot for one student to handle. Being a human, we go through many emotions and changes. Some young adults do not know ways to cope/control their strong emotions. College students tend to shut down mentally and physically from the world when they’re feeling stressed out. Research found most college students lack hardiness (the ability to endure difficult conditions). Researchers described hardiness as the willingness or drive to pursue challenges, transform them, and make them work towards the goal. Hardiness has been shown to help against depression, anxiety, performances and self-esteem (Maddi, 2002). Emerging adulthood is a critical point  in everyone’s life and college students go through acute stress during this time period. In a study about college students it was stated that they often turn to drinking alcohol in order to relieve stress. (Find ages/gender that relates to drinking). The researchers found students drank to cope with stress as opposed to occasional drinks or to socialize; drinking to cope with stress may increase risk of alcoholism. Extreme binge drinking is becoming problematic among minority college students. Heavy binge drinking among college students has been associated with a range of serious consequences like memory loss, risky sexual behavior, addiction, academic impairment, car accidents, violence, and even death; (Hingson 2009). Research findings suggest that young African American adults consume less alcohol than Whites (Siebert, 2003). Furthermore, the lower rates of alcohol consumption imply that they engage in low-risk drinking behaviors. In other words, African Americans who use alcohol at a later age in comparison to their white peers experience more stress. Do not exhibit similar maturation patterns out of high-risk drinking behaviors beyond college. An understanding the effect of psychological stress upon oneself is very important.Apathy in college StudentsSome college students are typically overwhelmed with problems at home, commitments that were made in and out of school, turning in class assignment on time, some may to realized that they can get by without working hard and some may feel like it’s too much to handle and simply give up and just don’t care about anything. These are  some symptoms of apathy behavior. Apathy is complete lack of emotion or motivation, whether directed towards a person, activity, or object. Apathy means “without feeling”. Apathy is a feeling like going numb, your are unstimulated, unconcerned and detached from yourself and the world. Hwang (1995) also shows evidence that the students of today are showing signs of apathy. Hwang (1995) relates in his article, student apathy, lack of self responsibility and false self esteem are failing American schools,  in today American society. Young college student are always looking for the fast and easy way out. In order for students to be motivated to learn or want more out of life, there has to be a sense of self-worth; this can be possible through with having a positive role model. When a student is not invested or uninterested, or does not care about the course school anymore. Apathy causes students to study less. Most likely apathy student will fail the course or anything in life. According to Rafini, ( 1986 ) students will often turn to apathy when they feel can not achieve their goal or when they feel overwhelmed.  According to mental health research conducted by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI): One in four students have a diagnosable illness, 40% of students don’t seek help, 80% feel overwhelmed by their responsibilities, and 50% have become so anxious that they struggled in school. Apathy is a debilitating but poorly understood disorder characterized by a reduction in motivation. As well as being associated with several brain disorders, apathy is also prevalent in varying degrees in healthy people. With many tools have been developed to assess levels of apathy in clinical disorders, surprisingly there are no measures of apathy suitable for healthy people. Moreover, although apathy is commonly confused with the symptoms of depression. This study use the Apathy-Motivation Index (AMI), to measure the relationship between a apathy and motivation. Factor analysis in a sample of 505 human participant, and confirmatory analysis using different set of human participant 479.They were able to  identify the factors of apathy in behavioural, social and emotional domains. In conclusion, the AMI is a reliable measure of individual differences in apathy and could be useful resource to provide information on different mechanisms underlying subclinical lack of motivation in otherwise healthy individuals. between apathy and lack of motivation states may be reflective of problems in different emotional, social and behavioural domains. Environment Your environment can shape your behavior and motivation to achieve your goal. This researchers concentrated their efforts on the creative process. the creative person or the creative product. (Hennessey, 2003) Research found your environmental factors that can impact creators and serve to boost or inhibit their creativity of performance. People have a strong need for support, safety and security . Your environment is more important than you it is.  this article found the effects of mortality depended critically on whether people grew up in a relatively resource-scarce or resource-plentiful environment. For individuals growing up relatively poor, mortality cues produced a desire to reproduce sooner to want children. ant children now, even at the cost of furthering one’s education or career. Conversely, for individuals growing up relatively wealthy, mortality cues produced a desire to delay reproduction—to further one’s education or career before starting a family. Overall, mortality cues appear to shift individuals into different life history strategies as a function of childhood socioeconomic status, suggesting important implications for how environmental factors can influence you family size. to explain why risks thought to be controllable (i.e., preventable by personal action) are likely to evoke unrealistic optimism about susceptibility.Method Section Participants For my research I plan to take a deeper look into what play in a role in college students lack of  motivation. Motivation directs behavior toward your future goal. This convenience sampling included 100 undergraduate participants from different background ethnic group, sex, religion, and socioeconomic, including 50 women and 50 men between the ages of 18 – 40 attending the University of the District of Columbia located in Washington, D.C. Each participants must have poor academic performance, and have symptoms of depression, and coming from a single parent home to be in this research, half of the student come from of stable home environment. Materials In my study, I will be obtaining demographic information. I will collect each participants age, socioeconomic status, sex, and ask if their were raised in single parent household.  I will conduct a face to face interview to obtain deeper information on participants. Each participant will have unlimited time to take 3 surveys/questionnaire. DASS test or the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales were developed by researchers at the University of New South Wales (Australia). DASS is a 21 item self report instrument designed to measure three related negative emotional states of depression, anxiety and tension/stress. Yuen-Siang Ang developed  Apathy Evaluation Scale (AES) The AES is an 18-item scale that measures apathy as a single construct. Each item was scored on a 4-point Likert scale, with a higher total score indicating greater apathy (1–4: 1 = ‘very true’, 4 = ‘not true at all’ for positively scored items) Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI) 26.The BDI is 21-item scale that measures the severity of depression. Each item relates to a symptom of depression, e.g., hopelessness, and was scored on a 4-point Likert scale (0–3: 0 = least severe, 3 = most severe). A higher total score indicates greater depression.Procedure First step I plan to ask widely around the campus university, and use social network to see if anyone is interestested in the study. I plan to collect participants data in person. Each participant will have to identify their ethnic group, educational level, socioeconomic status, and poor academic performance. Each  participants will have to be interview to make sure he or she fit the criterion. Then each person will enter a room separately and take 3 survey/questionnare.  Then participants will have unlimited time to take 3 questionnaire/surveys. I plan to include compensate for each participant. Each participant’s time and transportation. I will give each participant’s a $100 gift card. Design In my design, to obtain the participants, I plan to ask widely around, use social network to see if anyone is interested in the study. Participants must be interviewed to make sure he or she fit the requirement of the study. Then each person will enter a comfortable room separately and take three questionnaire/survey. Each participants have unlimited of time in between each questionnaire/survey, which they will be more relax, open and truthful with their answer. I will do a face to face interview, asking personal question and why minority study lack motivation.  I  plan to include compensate for each participant’s time and transportation. I will give each participant’s a $50 gift card.
